A week after Donald Trump applauded Vladimir Putin down the red carpet in Alaska, and days after an unprecedented summit of European leaders at the White House, the American president came crashing down to earth on Friday.
“I’m not happy about it, and I’m not happy about anything having to do with that war,” he told reporters who asked about an American factory in Ukraine being hit by a Russian strike.
For all the pomp and pageantry, spectacles and summitry of the past week, analysts say the underlying reality of the war has not changed.
Russia is still bombing Ukraine and in the past few days Moscow has put up more roadblocks to peace.
A summit between Russian and Ukrainian leaders seems as far away as ever.
