Donald Trump said he agrees with Pope Francis’s message of tolerance for migrants, despite the White House previously clashing with the late pontiff.
Speaking to reporters at the White House Easter egg roll on Monday, the US president was asked if he agreed with the Pope’s message of tolerance for migrants, to which he responded: “Yeah, I do”. He did not elaborate.
Since January, Mr Trump has cracked down on the US-Mexico border and championed hardline immigration policies, including the deportation of hundreds of migrants to a top-security prison in El Salvador.
Mr Trump described the late Pope as “a very good man who loved the world”, adding: “and he especially loved people who were having a hard time, and that’s good with me”.
The president also said that he wasn’t sure if he would attend Pope Francis’s funeral as he was still working on his schedule.
The Pope met with JD Vance, the US vice-president, the day before he died.
