A man convicted of trying to assassinate Donald Trump tried to stab himself in the neck in court as he was found guilty of the crime.
On Tuesday, a jury found that Ryan Routh intended to kill Mr Trump when he pointed a rifle through a fence at the US president’s Florida golf course.
After the guilty verdict was read out, Routh took a pen and stabbed himself in the neck. He was not hurt, according to Sky News.
Mr Trump, then-Republican presidential candidate, had been playing a round of golf at the Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach in September 2024 when Routh was discovered in the bushes.
Routh fled without firing a shot after a Secret Service agent patrolling the course ahead of the course spotted him and opened fire.
Prosecutor John Shipley said Routh’s murder plot was “carefully crafted and deadly serious”, adding that without the agent intervening, “Donald Trump would not be alive”.
He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
