It should have been a moment to bask in the glory of what Donald Trump had just described as “one of the greatest days ever in civilisation”.

But as he stood beside Benjamin Netanyahu, the prime minister of Israel, after unveiling a 20-point peace plan to end the war in Gaza and bring peace to the Middle East, something highly unusual happened. Mr Trump became bashful.

“So I think while we wait for these documents to be signed and get everybody in line, I think it maybe is not really appropriate to take questions,” he said.

International diplomacy is often best conducted in private, allowing differences to be ironed out well away from cameras and microphones.

But that is not how Mr Trump, the question-taker-in-chief, operates. Everything is showtime.
