A high school was on lockdown on Wednesday night after two students were shot in what is believed to be the first school shooting to take place in the United States this year.

Officers raced to Antioch High School, in Nashville, Tennessee, following reports of gunfire at around 11.11 am on Wednesday.

The gunman, who opened fire in the cafeteria, was “no longer a threat” after turning the gun on himself, the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD) said.

It is thought to be the first school shooting of 2025. A student of Lindley Middle School, in Mabelton, Georgia, shot herself with a gun on campus earlier this month but did not target any fellow students.

A statement from Metro Nashville Public Schools said: “Antioch High School is on a lockdown due to shots being fired inside the school building. Metro Police are on the scene.

“The person responsible for shooting is no longer a threat. We will be gathering students in the auditorium and will provide information on reunification as soon as possible.

“This is an active crime scene and investigation. We will work with the MNPD to provide further updates as they become available.”
