In his first term, Donald Trump said the White House almost felt like a prison.
He labelled the presidential residence a “cocoon,” complaining that he felt stuck in a bubble: “You’re really into your own little cocoon, because you have such massive protection that you really can’t go anywhere,” he told Reuters in 2017.
This time around, he is gilding the Oval Office, paving over the Rose Garden, mocking Joe Biden with a portrait of an autopen in his presidential hall of fame, and having fun doing it.
Even though Mr Trump will spend two days this week in New York, first at the United Nations and then watching the Ryder Cup, he will not be staying at Trump Tower on Friday night.
The US president is expected to fly back to Washington to spend the weekend in the historic building he has clearly begun to think of as home.
