SIR – As Jordan Peterson and Gregg Hurwitz note, we are living with enemies who operate by different rules (“The West’s true enemy is clear. We must strike now before it’s too late”, telegraph.co.uk, September 30).
On October 7, we saw torture, rape and death celebrated by thousands. I desperately want peace with my neighbours, but this was a wake-up call. In Iran and its proxies we have adversaries that seek to kill me and my fellow citizens (“Iran threatens more ‘crushing attacks’ after ballistic missile barrage”, telegraph.co.uk, October 1).
Israel doesn’t have a choice: it simply must prevent this from happening. The rest of the world does have a choice, however: sit back and pretend the problem will go away, or stand by Israel. The threat must surely be faced down before it is too late.

SIR – Israel is right to ignore the pacifists and appeasers. When dealing with terrorists, diplomacy is futile. There is now an opportunity to destroy both Hamas and Hezbollah, and change the dynamic of the entire Middle East.

SIR – Those who have urged Israel to show restraint need to suggest an alternative way to stop the firing of rockets at Israeli civilians.
Iran will continue its aggression. Meanwhile, in Europe, Vladimir Putin will be happy to know that his thuggery is going almost unnoticed.
Israel and Ukraine are fighting for the rest of the free world. Isn’t it time our governments showed more appreciation for their courage?

SIR – The United Nations has failed to make any contribution towards ending the conflict in and around Israel.
Israel was established following a UN mandate, but the organisation now appears to take an entirely negative line on it. Condemning Israel and its leadership does nothing to alleviate the suffering in Palestine, Lebanon – or, indeed, Israel itself.

SIR – In the 1980s, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a fundamentalist wing of the Islamic Republic’s military, formed Hezbollah in Lebanon with the express purpose of destroying Israel. It also targeted our forces and allies in the Persian Gulf. In the waters around Iran and the Gulf of Aden, the IRGC threatens our shipping, either with its own navy or by bankrolling Houthis in Yemen.
It seeks to sow division in Britain and carries out attacks on Iranian dissidents across the globe. In opposition, Labour called for the proscription of this organisation. It should now follow through.
