Ali Younis had seen social media videos of Beirut’s fabled SkyBar and Skinn nightclubs, but could never imagine stepping foot inside.

Not, he was quick to point out, because he was a prude who did not like to party, but simply because he felt he was never likely to be able to afford them.

Beirut has long been regarded as a 24-hour party city with nightlife the envy of anywhere in the Middle East. 

At its high-end super-clubs, the prices can be eye-wateringly expensive. Booking a table to party with the high rollers at the Skinn club starts at £700 per night.

However, the club has welcomed a new clientele, opening their dance floors to shelter hundreds of people who have fled Israeli airstrikes in the southern suburbs.

Israel’s onslaught against Hezbollah and the huge wave of displacement it has caused has largely ended, for the moment at least, in a city once called the Paris of the Middle East for its party scene.
