Ten Britons accused of war crimes in Gaza while fighting for Israel

Ten British nationals have been accused of committing war crimes in Gaza while serving with the Israeli military.

A report fronted by one of Britain’s most prominent human rights lawyers alleges how civilians and aid workers were deliberately targeted and killed by the suspects, including by sniper fire.

A summary of the 240-page dossier, seen by The Telegraph, claims civilian areas including hospitals were “indiscriminately targeted” by the British nationals and that they carried out “coordinated attacks” on protected sites, including historic monuments and religious sites.

The report relies on testimonials from witnesses and open source evidence, such as videos published on social media.

One witness claimed a bulldozer “ran over a dead body in a horrific and heart-wrenching scene desecrating the dead” and that the vehicle demolished part of a hospital.

Another said Israeli soldiers had ordered her father, husband and children to strip and were taken one by one into a living room, covered in glass, where they were then beaten with an electric cable and large billiard stick.

The evidence was compiled by a group of lawyers in Britain and researchers in The Hague and covers the first six months of the war – October 2023 to May 2024.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s prime minister, and Yoav Gallant, Israel’s former defence minister are the subject of arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for crimes against humanity and war crimes for their role in the conflict.

Mr Netanyahu has denied the allegations and said the “decision was made by a corrupt chief prosecutor attempting to save himself from serious allegations of sexual harassment, and by biased judges driven by anti-Semitic hatred toward Israel”.

Both Israel and the US have argued the ICC does not have any jurisdiction over the Jewish state as it is not a member of the court.

‘No one is above the law’

Michael Mansfield KC, who represented the victims of Grenfell Tower, will be submitting the report to Scotland Yard’s Counter Terrorism Command on behalf of the organisations on Monday afternoon.

The group hopes the report will compel the Metropolitan Police to launch an investigation against the suspects, who are of dual British and Israeli nationality, and, if successful, bring criminal charges against them.

Mr Mansfield said: “In the last 18 months we have witnessed international crimes unfold.

“Our leaders have done little if anything to prevent the suffering of millions of innocent Palestinians.

“We ask the War Crimes Team to take this report seriously, investigate, and if proven, arrest and try the individuals named.

“British nationals are under a legal obligation not to collude with crimes committed in Palestine. No one is above the law.”

Some of the suspects are believed to be of officer rank.

Further details of the 10 British individuals cannot be made public due to concerns it will prejudice any criminal investigations.

Paul Heron, legal director of the Public Interest Law Centre, a human rights organisation which commissioned the report, said: “Shockingly, British citizens have actively served in Israel’s armed forces, directly contributing to atrocities.

“As a law centre based in Britain, we have a duty to stand up. We’re filing our report to make clear these war crimes are not in our name.”
