A British teenager has been reported missing in Tenerife as it emerged he made a phone call to a friend saying he was lost and needed water.
Jay Slater, 19, from Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, had been in the Canary Islands for a weekend rave when he attempted a trek through a national park.
Lucy Mae, one of the friends with whom he went on the holiday, said she had a call from him on Monday morning, saying his phone had 1 per cent battery, that he was lost and needed a drink.
According to Ms Mae, Jay said he was trying to walk back to the apartment, having been unable to catch a bus.
Jay’s mother Debbie, who has arrived in Tenerife to help with the rescue effort, told Mail Online the distance from where he is believed to have gone missing to the apartment is a 10-hour walk.
“I’m beside myself with worry,” she said as she flew to the island with her eldest son.
“He’d been at a three-day festival so he would have consumed a fair bit of alcohol but Jay was Snapchatting with friends before he went missing and seemed very compos mentis.”
