The former chief executive of the SNP has been spotted leaving the home he shares with Nicola Sturgeon for the first time since his arrest.

Peter Murrell, 58, was pictured leaving the couple's detached property near Glasgow which earlier this month was searched by police.

Mr Murrell was detained on April 5 and questioned by detectives for 11 hours before being released without charge "pending further investigation".

Police investigating the party's finances also arrested the then SNP treasurer Colin Beattie on Tuesday, who was also released without charge.

A motorhome which was intended to be used for party campaigning was seized from the driveway of Mr Murrell's mother on Wednesday, April 9.

Mr Murrell, wearing a jacket and blue shirt, was spotted leaving the home he shares with ex-first minister Ms Sturgeon in Uddingston this morning. He was pictured driving away in the couple's black Peugeot from the redbrick property and did not speak to the media.

It comes as Ms Sturgeon's successor as First Minister, Humza Yousaf, has been thrust into overseeing the party's finances following Mr Beattie's resignation as treasurer on Wednesday.

Mr Beattie, who is also an SNP MSP, served as treasurer from 2004 to 2020, and again from 2021.

Speaking to the BBC, Mr Yousaf said he hopes to soon appoint someone to what is usually an elected position.

He said: "We'll appoint a treasurer in the coming days, but of course, as party leader, I'll make sure I'm overseeing the finances of the party. But we'll appoint a new national treasurer as soon as we can."

The post is usually one elected by members, but Mr Yousaf said the party is "not going to have time" to elect someone to the role, and he ruled out continuing in the job alongside being party leader and First Minister.

Asked if he had pushed Mr Beattie to resign, Mr Yousaf said: "Colin and I had a conversation, as you'd expect us to do, and he understood that the best thing for the party was for him to step back as being national treasurer."

Mr Yousaf is appearing at First Minister's questions at lunchtime.
