A pub landlord repeatedly punched his elderly neighbour in a row over "smelly" bins.

Daniel Winward, 44, left Simon Procter, 70, with twenty stitches to a large head wound and severe cuts and bruises, after long-running tensions over the aroma of rubbish boiled over.

An argument had broken out between residents of Morecambe, Lancashire, who accused Winward, who runs the nearby Morecambe Hotel pub, of wheeling his commercial bins onto the road which smelt unpleasant.

But when Winward, a former commando who served three tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan, returned from a holiday in August last year, the tensions came to a head.

He believed there had been a further row with a neighbour who raised fire risk concerns over his bin.

In CCTV footage, Winward is shown ambushing Mr Procter, a retired excavator who was receiving treatment for bowel and prostate cancer, as he steps out of the front door of his home on Beecham Street, before pushing him to the ground.

He is then shown inflicting eight punches while the pensioner lies helpless on the road.
