A runaway sausage dog has been captured after a 529-day adventure on an Australian island teeming with kangaroos, possums, koala bears and penguins.

Valerie, the miniature dachshund, had eluded searchers on Kangaroo Island since November 2023, only making rare appearances in fuzzy glimpses caught by night-time cameras that revealed a collar.

The saga enthralled the Australian public after Valerie escaped during a camping trip with owners Georgia Gardner and her partner Josh Fishlock, dashing out of a pen and into the bush.

The owners gave up hope after days of searching on the island, which spans more than 4,400 sq km (1,700 sq miles) of farms, nature reserves, and craggy cliffs.
