Sir Keir Starmer said Rishi Sunak must launch a formal investigation into whether Suella Braverman broke the ministerial code amid a row over a speeding fine.

The Labour leader said that “from what we know it looks as if inappropriate action took place from the Home Secretary”.

Mr Sunak is due to consult Sir Laurie Magnus, his ethics adviser, on the matter and Sir Keir said the Prime Minister must instruct Sir Laurie to investigate.

Sir Keir suggested that if Ms Braverman had breached the code then she should resign, telling BBC Breakfast that “if you break it you are supposed to go”.

The Home Secretary has been accused of asking civil servants to help organise a private driving awareness course as she sought to avoid incurring points on her licence after being caught speeding.

Sources close to the Home Secretary said she was “trying to understand” what she could do, rather than make any “direction” to civil servants.

Allies of Ms Braverman fear she is the victim of a smear campaign amid an increasingly acrimonious battle over her efforts to crack down on net migration.
