While ministers and defence experts wonder how on earth they’ll manage to get the requisite numbers to form a worthwhile peacekeeping force on the ground, if there is a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, there are others whose main worry is that they’ll be left out in the cold.
They include those who’ve recently left the ranks of Britain’s Armed Forces but in some circumstances can be called back “to the colours” from our regular reserves, until in some cases they reach the age of 55, although this is highly unlikely.
“They’d have to be pretty hard-pushed to call people back at that age,” said one senior (retired) officer.
However, it is becoming clear that there is more than a little enthusiasm among some former soldiers for a recall to regular Army duties.
One I spoke to at the weekend suggested that there were several of his former comrades who were not all against the idea of being “called up”.
