A rare white penguin has been filmed in Antarctica at a scientific base.

The female gentoo penguin has leucism, a condition that reduces skin pigmentation. It has rendered the normally black and white bird white and light brown instead.

“Every day Antarctica and this beautiful place surprise us with something different,” said Hugo Alejandro Harris Guerra, a Chilean army cook who filmed the penguin.

A colony of the gentoo penguins surrounds Chile’s Gabriel González Videla research station in western Antarctica.

Leucism is rare because it is caused by a recessive gene. It can make animals easier for predators to hunt, because they can be seen more easily.
