The result isn’t in doubt: a resounding victory, securing his iron grip over the Russian state.

Were he to serve out his new six-year-term, he would be the longest-serving ruler of Russia since the 18th century. Indeed, Putin always seeks to project this image of continuity and stability with the great Russian past, despite the turbulence of communism.

But, as we saw with Wagner leader Yevgeny Prigozhin and political rival Alexei Navalny, nothing can be taken for granted in modern Russia. A transfer of power, a loss of confidence from his inner circle or the unthinkable – assassination.
