Politics latest news: Sunak to hold press conference ahead of Rwanda Bill showdown

Rishi Sunak will hold a press conference in Downing Street today to urge peers to finally allow his flagship Rwanda Bill to complete its passage through Parliament and become law.

The Prime Minister will address the media this morning ahead of crunch votes on the Bill this afternoon and likely this evening.

Weeks of parliamentary back-and-forth are set to come to a head, with the House of Lords having repeatedly blocked the Bill with a series of amendments which the Government does not want to accept.

Downing Street has vowed to keep Parliament sitting late into the night if necessary to pass the Bill and get it onto the statute book.

Mr Sunak is expected to use the press conference this morning to underline why he believes the legislation is vital to his plan to curb small boat crossings of the English Channel.

Mr Sunak labelled the Bill “emergency legislation” when it was first brought forward but parliamentary debate has stretched over more than four months, delaying migrant deportation flights from taking off.
