Sir Keir Starmer is set to hold a press conference with German chancellor Olaf Scholz in Berlin as the Prime Minister sets out his ambition to “turn a corner on Brexit”.
Sir Keir held talks with Mr Scholz this morning to discuss plans for a new treaty with Germany aiming to boost business and increase joint action on illegal migration.
The Prime Minister was expected to tell his counterpart that he is focused on making sure the UK moves past Brexit and rebuilds relationships with European partners.
Sir Keir was expected to say: “We have a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reset our relationship with Europe and strive for genuine, ambitious partnerships that deliver for the British people. We must turn a corner on Brexit and fix the broken relationships left behind by the previous government.”
Labour has promised there will be no return to the EU single market, the customs union, or freedom of movement but has pledged to “improve” the UK’s post-Brexit trade deal. The Tories have accused Labour of plotting to unpick Brexit.
Following his visit to Germany, Sir Keir will travel to Paris to attend the Paralympics opening ceremony and to hold talks with Emmanuel Macron, the French president.
