Nigel Lawson was a "titan of intellect and the post-war world", his successor as the Conservative MP for Blaby has said.

Andrew Robathan, who now sits in the House of Lords as a Conservative peer, took over from Lord Lawson in the Leicestershire constituency from 1992.

He described the former chancellor as a "very impressive man" as he paid tribute to him this morning following his death at the age of 91.

Speaking to Times Radio, Lord Robathan said: "He was a very impressive man, a very hard act to follow in my case. Interestingly he was not just much respected, he was much admired and loved in the constituency and he was very good with the constituents, he worked hard for his constituency as well as for the country.

"I think he is a titan of intellect and the post-war world and well, perhaps we shall see his like again, I don’t know, I hope so."

'I think he would have been on the side of Rishi and Jeremy Hunt'

Lord Robathan, who took over from Lord Lawson as the Tory MP for Blaby in 1992, said he believed the former chancellor would view Rishi Sunak and Jeremy Hunt as being "on the right track" on their handling of the economy.

He told Times Radio: "He supported Rishi Sunak. I think he would have said… that Rishi Sunak is on the right track and you have to curb inflation before you can deal with the other issues."

He added: "I think he would have been on the side of Rishi and Jeremy Hunt but he might have taken a somewhat different road to achieve the ends."
