David Cameron’s return to the political front line demonstrates how “strong and united” the Conservative Party is, the new Tory chairman has claimed.
Richard Holden said Lord Cameron’s appointment as Foreign Secretary during Rishi Sunak’s Cabinet reshuffle was a “shock to everybody”.
But Mr Holden said it was a “really welcome surprise”, telling Times Radio: “I think it was quite a shock to everybody.
“Traditionally in politics things are difficult to keep quiet but this one was a real shock to everybody and a really welcome surprise as well to have somebody with that much experience returning to the front line of British politics, showing just what a strong and united party we are across the country.”
However, Lord Cameron’s return was not welcomed by everyone in the Conservative Party as it triggered a row with the Tory Right.
One Tory MP accused Mr Sunak of an attempt to “purge the centre-Right from his Cabinet” following the sacking of Suella Braverman.
