Channel migrants are "proactively abusing" the UK's hospitality, James Cleverly said this morning.

The Foreign Secretary said the UK has "always been a generous nation" but if people abuse that generosity it "erodes trust in the immigration system".

Mr Cleverly was asked if he agreed with comments made by Robert Jenrick, the immigration minister, earlier this week when he said "those crossing tend to have completely different lifestyles and values to those in the UK".

The Foreign Secretary told Sky News: "The people from many, many parts of the world who have come into the UK over many, many decades have integrated fully and successfully in British society, we have always been a generous nation.

"But we can also see that there are people who are proactively abusing our hospitality and a national character is very much like a personal character, people are generous of spirit but if we see people abusing that generosity it erodes trust, it erodes trust in the immigration system."

The comments came after the Government’s Illegal Migration Bill cleared the House of Commons last night. The draft legislation will now head to the House of Lords for further scrutiny.
