A lifeguard who appeared in a Pirates of the Caribbean film has died after he was attacked by a shark while surfing in Hawaii.
Tamayo Perry, 49, who was also a professional surfer, was attacked near Goat Island off the northeast shore of Oahu on Sunday afternoon, Honolulu’s emergency services said.
Honolulu Ocean Safety and the city’s fire, police and emergency medical services arrived at Mālaekahana Beach on Oahu’s North Shore just before 1pm after a caller reported seeing a man who appeared to have suffered shark bites, Shayne Enright of the Honolulu emergency services department said.
Lifeguards brought Perry to shore by jet ski where he was treated by paramedics, Mr Enright said. They were unable to save him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Ocean Safety personnel posted shark warnings in the area following the attack.
