I think we can all agree that this was “Parliament at its best”. No questions, no scrutiny, just a collective dash to war and some mindless patriotism.
Keir Starmer told a packed House that the nation “stands” with Ukraine and will be sending them bombs made in Belfast (now that’s a stamp of quality!). Kemi thanked him for “our conversation earlier today” – which explains his black eye – and said she stands with him, too. Indeed, the session quickly became standing room only as MPs rose to praise the PM and his proposed “coalition of the willing”.
There aren’t many countries in that coalition yet – just Britain and France (as long as the war doesn’t intrude on weekends) – but its ranks could easily be filled with middle-aged MPs, pundits, twitterers and collectors of Antony Beevor books, who all seem convinced they could have Vladimir Putin in a fight.
