Oxford Union president to face ‘disciplinary proceedings’ over Charlie Kirk messages

The incoming Oxford Union president who celebrated the shooting of Charlie Kirk is set to face both disciplinary proceedings and a vote of no confidence when he takes up the post next month.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the world-famous student debating society announced that complaints made against George Abaraonye over his online comments will be treated with “the utmost seriousness” under disciplinary proceedings.

The Oxford Union does not have the power to summarily dismiss a president-elect.

However, under the society’s disciplinary policy, any office holder found to have committed serious misconduct can face penalties up to and including immediate dismissal.

It can also be revealed 200 life members of the debating society – former Oxford University students who have paid to retain their membership – have expressed their willingness to support a vote of no confidence in Mr Abaraonye’s leadership.

This surpasses the 150 signatures required to bring no confidence proceedings.

Mr Abaraonye, who was voted in as president-elect earlier this year, has been widely condemned for his decision to post comments online appearing to celebrate the lethal attack on the influential American Right-wing activist

On Wednesday evening he sent texts to a group chat in the wake of the attack on Kirk, including one saying: “Charlie Kirk got shot, let’s f------ go” – a common celebratory phrase among Gen Z.

Another message, believed to be sent from the incoming Oxford Union president’s Instagram account, stated: “Charlie Kirk got shot loool” – an exaggeration of the abbreviation “laughing out loud”.

Mr Abaraonye has since deleted the remarks, insisting they were made before Mr Kirk’s death was announced, though he later defended his reasoning.
