A pro-Palestinian protester who led chants calling on Gaza to “put the Zios in the ground” is a philosophy, politics and economics student at the University of Oxford.
Samuel Williams, from Tunbridge Wells, Kent, is now under investigation by the Met Police after making the remarks at a march in central London on Saturday.
Speaking through a microphone he told the crowd: “A steadfast and noble resistance in Palestine and in Gaza to look to, to be inspired by and, I don’t want to yap for too long, but a chant that we’ve been workshopping in Oxford that maybe you guys want to join in.
“It goes ‘Gaza, Gaza make us proud, put the Zios in the ground’.”
He repeated the chant, using the word “Zio” as an abbreviation of “Zionists”, with several others joining in around him.
Oxford University said it condemned the chant “in the strongest possible terms” but refused to confirm whether Mr Williams would face any repercussions.
