A mountain in New Zealand has been granted the same legal rights as a person, after a law recognising injustices done to the Maori people during colonisation was passed unopposed in parliament.
Mount Taranaki – now known as Taranaki Maunga, its Maori name – is the third natural feature to be granted personhood in the country, following the Urewera Forest in 2014 and the Whanganui River in 2017.
