Mishal Husain has criticised “bombastic” presenters after leaving the Today programme.
The former host of the flagship Radio 4 show announced she was moving on in 2024 after 11 years on Today and more than two decades at the BBC.
Speaking to British Vogue, she has now raised concerns about the growing trend of “personality-driven” journalism.
“Personality-focused journalism doesn’t have to be bombastic,” she said. “It doesn’t have to be about the presenters centring themselves. Hopefully, if they’re a personality with journalistic integrity, journalistic values, then they can be a conduit to the news for people.”
While Husain, 52, did not mention her former colleagues Emma Barnett and Amol Rajan directly, the broadcaster said her own style of presenting was always informed by the fact that she considered herself part of a team, rather than a star personality.
She said: “What was true to me was that I would very rarely use the word ‘I’, actually on air.
“I would quite often say, ‘We’ve talked to so and so, because you’re always part of a team. From the booking of guests, the deciding to go down a certain route, the writing of a brief – broadcasting is a team effort.
“So I would always say ‘we’ and very rarely use the word ‘I’. That’s just what came naturally to me.”
Rajan was brought in by BBC bosses in 2021 to “bring his trademark insight and flair” to the programme, while Emma Barnett was added to the Today team in 2024 to bring “energy and verve” to the lineup. By the end of the year, Husain would announce her departure.
