The number of migrants coming from the US to seek asylum in Canada has increased by 400 per cent over the last year.
During the first six days of July, Canadian officials at the Saint-Bernard-de-Lacolle border crossing — the busiest land port between New York and Quebec — received 761 asylum claims, a more than 400 per cent increase from the same period a year ago, according to data from the Canada Border Services Agency.
The number of claims at the crossing rose 128 per cent in June and is up 82 per cent overall since the start of the year.
The spike comes amid Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown. Immigration arrests in the US have more than doubled since Mr Trump entered office.
There were 95,617 arrests between Jan 20 and June 10 2025, according to the latest five-month period covered by the new data from the Data Deportation Project (DDP).
Meanwhile, the Trump administration has deported around 300 alleged Venezuelan gang members to the notorious Cecot prison in El Salvador, as part of a deal with the country.
