Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has presented Israel’s first post-war plan for Gaza, including a constant military presence in the strip.
Under the new plan a “security buffer zone” will be installed along the Palestinian side of the Strip’s border, remaining in place “as long as there is a security need for it”.
To prevent a resurgence of terror activity, the Israeli Defence Forces will have the right to operate throughout the entire strip indefinitely and Gaza’s border with Egypt will be closed.
Mr Netanyahu’s plan also envisions Gaza’s “complete demilitarization… beyond what is required for the needs of maintaining public order”.
Israel will refuse to recognise a Palestinian state, which it views as a “reward for terror” for the foreseeable future. Such measures have been discussed since the start of fighting last October.
