The Paris police chief who restored the force’s reputation after chaos at the 2022 Champions League final has taken on one of the toughest roles in French politics.
Laurent Nunez will head France’s interior ministry, as Sébastien Lecornu, reappointed as prime minister, bets on a team that projects calm authority rather than party loyalty.
Mr Nunez, a respected civil servant and former intelligence chief, steadied the Paris police after Liverpool football fans were wrongly blamed for disorder at the final against Real Madrid at the Stade de France.
With the country approaching an economic cliff-edge if it fails to pass a budget in the coming weeks, Mr Lecornu, 39, presented his cabinet on Sunday evening.
