A Labour MP’s home was allegedly attacked with a sledgehammer after the general election result. Andrew Western, who was re-elected as the MP for Stretford and Urmston on Thursday, claimed that the incident took place on Saturday evening and police have since launched an investigation.
He said he was “absolutely fine” and “no one was hurt”, but warned the “toxicity in our politics at present must be drawn out”, as “harassment, intimidation and abuse” of politicians is becoming “an ever more regular occurrence”.
It comes after Shabana Mahmood and Jess Phillips reported their own frightening experiences on the campaign trail.
Mahmood said “masked men” had disrupted a community meeting, “terrifying those present”, while Phillips claimed an activist canvassing with her had her car’s tyres slashed, describing it as “the worst” election she had ever fought.
All three MPs faced challenges from candidates running on pro-Gaza tickets, with Mahmood and Phillips only narrowly beating their respective rivals – one independent and one from George Galloway’s Workers Party – to cling on to their seats.
Western finished far further ahead of the Workers Party candidate in his race, who only managed fourth place.
