The Kremlin expressed its “satisfaction” on Monday with a US proposal to ban Ukraine from joining Nato.
“We have heard from Washington at various levels that Ukraine’s membership in Nato is excluded,” Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, told reporters on Monday.
“Of course, this is something that causes our satisfaction and coincides with our position.”
Donald Trump, the US president, has said in the past that US support for Ukrainian accession to Nato was a cause of the war.
On Sunday, General Keith Kellogg, the US envoy, said that Nato alliance membership was “off the table” for Ukraine.
It comes as the White House ups the ante to bring about peace, amid frustration among Mr Trump’s team that efforts to end the war in Ukraine are not progressing as swiftly as hoped.
Mr Trump famously said he could end the war 24 hours after taking office. But three months of attacks from both sides have continued.
Russia and Ukraine accused each other of thousands of attacks that violated a one-day Easter ceasefire declared by Vladimir Putin.
