Julian Assange was among those mourning Pope Francis in St Peter’s Square on Saturday.
The bearded WikiLeaks founder and his wife, Stella, were filmed chatting to others paying their respects to the pontiff, drinking from two bottles of plastic water.
Assange, wearing a black suit, was also seen with his children, interacting with soldiers wearing camouflage uniforms bearing the Maltese cross.
Pope Francis met with Stella in 2023, during Assange’s 14-year legal fight against extradition to the US from Britain. The pontiff had written to Assange in March 2021, she said at the time.
“He has provided great solace and comfort and we are extremely appreciative for his reaching out to our family in this way,” she told AP at the time. “He understands that Julian is suffering and is concerned.”
