John Lewis has decided it will not pay a bonus to staff for the third time in four years despite the partnership returning to profit.

The retailer said that it would instead focus on impriving pay and its business, which “must continue to take priority”.

The company made a pre-tax profit of £42m before exceptional items, an improvement of £120m compared to a £78m loss in the previous year.
