Jimmy Kimmel’s show will return – but local TV stations refuse to air it

Jimmy Kimmel’s talk show will return to air after it was cancelled indefinitely over his “offensive” comments about Charlie Kirk’s death.

ABC parent The Walt Disney Company said it reinstated Jimmy Kimmel Live! after having “having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy”.

“Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country,” it said in a statement on Monday.

“It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday.”

Turning Point, the conservative organisation founded by Kirk, responded by urging ABC affiliates not to run Kimmel’s show when production resumes on Tuesday.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, a major owner of local ABC affiliate stations, confirmed on Monday evening that it would not air the programme.

In a statement shared on X, the broadcaster said: “Beginning Tuesday night, Sinclair will be preempting Jimmy Kimmel Live! across our ABC affiliate stations and replacing it with news programming.

“Discussions with ABC are ongoing as we evaluate the show’s potential return.”

Kimmel had sparked Republican outrage when he said that a “Maga gang” was trying to score political points from the killing of Kirk, the 31-year-old conservative influencer who was shot dead at a Utah university on September 10.
