JB Pritzker has sued Donald Trump’s administration to stop National Guard troops from reaching Chicago.
Mr Pritzker, the governor of Illinois, on Monday launched a last-ditch legal challenge to stop the White House’s deployment of soldiers, who are currently en route to his state.
The prominent Democrat accused the US president of attempting an “act of occupation by the US military”.
Mr Trump insisted the move is necessary to stop Chicago being overtaken by lawlessness and rioting, as federal agents launch military-style immigration raids and tensions flare between protesters and authorities.
Around 200 members of Texas’ National Guard were heading towards to the city as of Monday, a military official said.
