At least one Israeli embassy worker was among a group of people targeted in a fatal shooting outside a Jewish museum in Washington, DC.
A man and a woman were killed in the attack, which Israel was quick to denounce as a “depraved act of antisemitic terrorism”.
The shooting took place on Wednesday night near the US capital’s Jewish Museum which had been hosting an event, according to American media.
Police said they were searching for a male suspect with a goatee wearing a blue jacket and blue jeans.
The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force was responding to the shooting, according to News4.
ABC News reported that a person of interest was being questioned by police.
Officers said the shooting happened at about 9.15pm local time (2.15am UK) near 3rd and F Streets, a short walk from the museum and the FBI field office in DC.
The two shooting victims are connected to a foreign embassy’s diplomatic staff and at least one of the people shot during the attack was an Israeli embassy staffer, sources told ABC News.
In a statement to ABC News, the office of the Israeli UN Ambassador said “employees” had been injured but did not give details on their condition.
“The fatal shooting that took place outside the event that took place at the Jewish Museum in Washington DC in which Israeli embassy employees were also injured is a depraved act of antisemitic terrorism,” the statement read.
“Harming diplomats in the Jewish community is crossing a red line.
“We are confident that the US attorneys will take strong action against those responsible for this criminal act.”
Police remained at the scene, cordoning off streets and speaking to witnesses.
More to come.
