Joe Biden is under pressure to launch retaliatory strikes on Iran after a drone strike killed three American service personnel in Jordan on Sunday.
The US president said on Sunday that Iran was to blame for the attack and that the US would “hold all those responsible to account”.
Lindsey Graham, a Republican senator, said the US must “strike targets of significance inside Iran, not only as reprisal for the killing of our forces, but as deterrence against future aggression,”
John Cornyn, another Republican senator, added: “Target Tehran.”
Mike Johnson, the Republican speaker of Congress, said: “America must send a crystal clear message across the globe that attacks on our troops will not be tolerated.”
Iran has denied its involvement in the attack, with foreign ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani saying on Monday that “resistance groups” do not take orders from it.
