Israel’s military chief has said that the Iranian strike “will be met with a response.”

Lt Gen Herzi Halevi did not elaborate on when and how Israel would respond to the direct attack from Iran, as world leaders urged against retaliation, trying to avoid a spiral of violence in the Middle East.

The army’s spokesman, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, added that Israel would make its next move “at the time that we choose.”

Both men spoke at the Nevatim air base in southern Israel, which was one of the few sites in Israel to be damaged by the Iranian attack.

It comes as UN inspectors monitoring Iranian nuclear sites have been evacuated due to “security considerations” amid the heightened threat of Israeli strikes on Tehran’s atomic facilities. 

“I decided to not let the inspectors return until we see that the situation is completely calm. We are going to resume tomorrow,” said Rafael Grossi, the UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency chief.
