At least 12 people have been killed by an Israeli airstrike on a hospital in north Gaza, the enclave’s Hamas-run health ministry said.
Patients and their relatives were among the dead at the Indonesian Hospital, ministry spokesman Ashraf al-Qudra said. Dozens of others were reportedly wounded.
There was no immediate response to the claim from Israel, which says Hamas uses medical facilities throughout Gaza for cover.
Marwan Abdallah, a medical worker at the Indonesian Hospital, said Israeli tanks were visible from the windows. “You can see them moving around and firing,” he said. “Women and children are terrified. There are constant sounds of explosions and gunfire.”
About 700 people are still inside the hospital, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
Israeli tanks and troops stormed into Gaza late last month and have since wrested control of large areas of the north and northwest and east around Gaza City. On Sunday, the Israeli military said it was “expanding its operational activities” ahead of a widely anticipated push south.
