Israel and Hamas have reached a ceasefire agreement to bring an end to 15 months of war.
If approved by the Israeli cabinet, it will end a protracted process in which multiple ceasefire proposals collapsed following last-minute demands from both sides.
What has happened?
Senior officials in Hamas and the US announced on Wednesday that a ceasefire agreement had been reached to end the war and release hostages taken by Hamas in 2023.
Anticipation had been building all week that a deal was close but negotiations reportedly hit a last-minute snag on Wednesday, just moments before the proposal was due to be confirmed by Qatar.
Minutes later, a Hamas official told Al Jazeera that the group had approved the proposal, which was brokered by Qatari and Egyptian mediators.
Has the ceasefire started?
Not yet. All we know is that the deal has been agreed between Israel and Hamas.
However, the deal still needs to be signed off by the Israeli cabinet.
