The United Nations secretary-general has warned that Israel might seize the opportunity to annex the occupied West Bank.
Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, António Guterres said: “There’s a risk that Israel will feel this is the moment to annex the West Bank and keep the Gaza Strip in a state of limbo.”
“It is clear to me that Israel is not fundamentally interested in Gaza. It’s fundamentally interested in the West Bank,” he added.
Mr Guterres also praised Donald Trump for helping secure a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
“There was a large contribution of the robust diplomacy of the at-the-time president-elect of the United States,” he said.
The UN chief’s warning about annexation plans came as the Israeli military continued to crack down on terror groups in the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank on Wednesday, leaving four people injured, according to the Palestinian Authority’s (PA’s) health ministry.
