Israel briefing: Five key developments in the Israel-Hamas war today

Antonio Guterres, UN Secretary General, should retract claims that Israel has violated international law, the Home Office minister has said.

In Gaza, the UN warns relief operations could be forced to shut down by the end of the day due to dwindling fuel supplies.

Here are the five key developments this morning:

1. UN Secretary General faces backlash over Israel comments

Antonio Guterres should retract his comments on Israel, the Home Office minister has said.

Robert Jenrick hit back at claims made by UN secretary-general António Guterres, who said there have been “clear violations of international humanitarian law”.

“We don’t agree with that,” Mr Jenrick told Sky News. “There is a clear right in international law for a nation to defend itself, and that is what Israel is doing.”

It comes after Eli Cohen, the Israeli foreign minister, cancelled a planned meeting with Mr Guterres over his comments, asking him: “Mr Secretary-General, in what world do you live?”

Gilad Erdan, Israel’s ambassador to the UN, added that the secretary-general should resign immediately, saying he was not fit to lead the organisation.
