Is the war in Gaza really over?

In a triumphal address to the Israeli Knesset, Donald Trump heralded a “new dawn” of peace in the Middle East.

As the US president joined other world leaders, including Sir Keir Starmer, in Egypt to hammer out the next steps of his 20-point plan for Gaza, many are waiting anxiously to see if the ceasefire will hold.

What does this breakthrough mean for the region, and what will happen next? Here’s everything you need to know.

What happened?

After the striking of a deal on Friday, all 20 remaining living hostages held in Gaza after being kidnapped by Hamas in the October 7 2023 attacks were freed on Monday.

Large crowds of Israelis watched the hostage transfers at public screenings across the country. In Tel Aviv, relatives and friends cheered as television channels announced that the first group was in the hands of the Red Cross.
