Iranians gathered in the northwestern city of Tabriz on Tuesday to mourn at the funerary procession of president Ebrahim Raisi after he died in a helicopter crash in nearby mountains on Sunday.
The president’s body will tour the country in the coming days, after Iran’s leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei announced five days of mourning.
A hardliner, Raisi had been in office since 2021 when Iran was rocked by mass protests against the repression of women.
Iran has announced an inquiry into the causes of the crash. Speculation in the Islamic Republic has pointed at both sabotage and a technical failure linked to western sanctions.
