Saudi Arabia’s military chief visited Tehran for talks with his Iranian counterpart amid a detente that could complicate Donald Trump’s plans to end the war between Israel and Hamas.

Fayyad al-Ruwaili, the Saudi chief of staff, met Maj Gen Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of Iran’s regular military, to discuss defence ties on Sunday, the Iranian armed forces general staff said.

Iranian state media said they discussed “the development of defence diplomacy and the expansion of bilateral co-operation”.

It came as Masoud Pezeshkian, the Iranian president, spoke with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman on the phone ahead of a summit of Muslim leaders that will focus on Israel’s wars in Gaza and Lebanon.
