‘Intense bombing’ pummels Gaza where ceasefire hopes are low

Rami al-Khalidi and his four children woke on Wednesday morning as they often do: terrified as Israeli bombs rain down in southern Gaza.

The 32-year-old carpenter, unemployed and living in a Khan Younis refugee camp because of the war, had hoped that day would be different due to the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah.

“We were following the news that there was a ceasefire in Lebanon and we thought that Gaza would be part of this agreement, but unfortunately we woke up to the sounds of intense bombing everywhere,” he told The Telegraph.

Mr Khalidi was not alone in thinking Israel and Hezbollah’s agreement could bring about peace in Gaza.

Joe Biden, announcing the deal on Tuesday, said it could serve as a blueprint for bringing about an end to a war which has killed 44,000 Palestinians, according to Hamas-controlled health authorities, and left Gaza a heap of ruins.
