Inside Israel’s controversial, often dangerous relationship with Eurovision

The often-troubled relationship between Israel and the Eurovision Song Contest has come to the fore again, this time after six protesters with whistles and “oversized” Palestinian flags obstructed Israel’s Yuval Raphael as she rehearsed her song on Thursday afternoon.

The 24-year-old was performing New Day Will Rise at a Eurovision preview show ahead of this Saturday’s final when the audience members attempted to disrupt her with the flags and whistles from their seats. All flags are allowed in the St Jakobshalle arena in Basel, Switzerland, but there are limits on their size, according to the BBC. The audience members were swiftly ejected from the arena.

Israel’s participation has stoked controversy due to the country’s bombardment of Gaza. Raphael’s involvement is particularly poignant, though. She was among the attendees at the Nova festival, at which Hamas terrorists killed 378 people and took 44 hostage. Raphael survived by taking refuge in a concrete bomb shelter and hiding under a pile of dead bodies for eight hours until she was rescued.
