Scotland would revert to burgundy passports after independence, according to a citizenship blueprint unveiled by Humza Yousaf.
The Scottish Government report said a separate Scotland would follow the EU’s recommended layout, size and colour.
It said British nationals living in Scotland, or those whose parents were Scottish would be eligible for one after separation.
They would automatically be eligible for citizenship, it said, and could hold dual nationality with the UK.
Despite the SNP’s plans to introduce a far more liberal immigration system, it argued that free movement would continue with the remainder of the UK and Ireland under the Common Travel Area.
However, it said most foreign nationals would have to live for five years in Scotland before getting citizenship, and the right to live and work in the rest of the UK under the CTA.
